Uncle Billy's Kona Bay Hotel: In the center of Kailua-Kona, this budget-friendly, Hawaiian-owned hotel is across the street from shopping and the ocean. All 145 rooms are air-conditioned and feature simple decor, with refrigerators, ceiling fans, and private lanais. The hotel has two pools—one just for kids—and a Polynesian-style lobby and restaurant. Beaches are a half-mile away. Uncle Billy’s Kona Bay Hotel and its sister property, Uncle Billy’s Hilo Bay Hotel, claim to be the only two Hawaiian-owned hotels in Hawaii. The hotel is staffed by Uncle Billy’s family, and there is an emphasis here on island congeniality and Hawaiian history and culture.
